The Hellenic Film Society presents eight of the best short films from the scores of submissions received for its first It’s Greek to Me Short Film Program. The shorts, all created by Greek-American filmmakers, include a variety of genres: drama, comedy, animation, sci-fi, and documentary. The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the directors.

AGAPI
Directed by Julia Speropoulos

Agapi is a hand-drawn animated short that sheds light on a forgotten atrocity. Set in 1921 during the Greek genocide, the historical drama follows 13-year-old Agapi and her family as they are forced from their homes and into a 40-day march in the snowy forest in Turkey.
Julia Speropoulos is an award-winning director and actor. Her documentaries have been shown at film festivals around the world and on Greek television. Julia splits her time between the US and Greece.
CICADA

After losing his wife, Papou reconciles with a changed sense of belonging as he returns to his Greek village without her. Amid quiet moments, the constant chorus of cicadas and the unhurried pace of Papou’s storytelling, the film portrays the difficulties of finding meaning in loss.
Matteo Moretti is a Greek-Italian-American filmmaker and cinematographer specializing in documentary, narrative and commercial work that explores the intersection of culture, environment, and people. He’s drawn to stories that preserve living traditions while capturing the quiet beauty and complexity of people and places worldwide.
MAN OVER AEGEAN

Alexander Pagonis is a native New Yorker with a passion for photography, film, and storytelling. At 17, he completed this debut film, rooted in his Greek heritage. He will attend NYU to study film, with plans to continue creating emotionally resonant, visually driven work that connects with his audience.

Alex Kokenis is a queer filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. She is the co-founder of It’s a Long Story Productions, where she has co-written and co-directed two short films. She is also a passionate editor, bringing others’ stories to life, especially those that focus on working women and nonbinary folks.
REAL TALK

Artemis Shaw is a New York City filmmaker interested in tragicomedy, docufiction, and the perils of the internet. Filmmaker Magazine named her among their New Faces of Film in 2025. Her sophomore feature, Removal of the Eye, is currently on the film festival circuit.
THE SONG OF THE WITCH

Minos Papas is an award-winning director and producer. His films have been selected for Sundance and SXSW and have won awards at Tribeca and the New York Emmys. His work investigates the human condition, trauma, and social issues.

Zina Wilde is a Greek-American actor, writer, and producer. As an actor she has made a career out of playing an assistant to billionaires, most notably on the hit TV show Billions and the miniseries Madoff. As a writer-producer, she has finished 14 short films and is working on her first series.
